Is Career Planning Really Useful?

Our cultural worship planning must be planned in advance.

Every day, every week, every year, our whole life.

We have journals, schedules, catalogues, objects, goals, strategies, and even dreams.

Career planning is the most insidious one in these cults because it encourages a sense of control over future events.

But we are not good at predicting our future.

When we can't predict what sandwiches to eat next week, how can we predict what kind of jobs we will be doing in the next 20 years? The future will be a stranger to you. That's why a 18 year old young person can hardly choose his career. In fact, it is the same for a middle-aged man, but he needs more condemnation. This is our culture.

Just like those questions in the questionnaire: how do you view the coming year?

time

This has caused a start: the future will start like a little game, ending like a belief built on the beach.

You guessed what the boss wanted most to hear, and then you answered what they wanted.

In fact, people usually don't know what they want, and psychology has proved this.

This is why career planning or at least those plans for your next move should be unpleasant.

When you are 18 years old, when people ask you what you want to do in the future, it will make you unhappy.

There may be many different views. There may be many differences in these views, and many of them are completely opposite.

But all possibilities have the same allure, which is surrounded by those infinite spiral future. It is not surprising that children who drop out of school follow their parents' footprints.

But we do not want to believe in those attempts or tests, for whatever reason.

We want to make decisions based on our own values and characteristics.

It's hard to make decisions at the age of 18, but middle-aged people who have already made good decisions in theory are also very difficult.

In fact, when you use 30 years of broad vision and optimism instead of cynical views,

work

You have become more aware of the bottom line of a job.

There are not only our work experience, but also our friends in our work, all these people will make us feel that our career has added luster.

Everyone has his own intrinsic trading value.

Do you like routine: boring but safe? Do you like traveling: exciting, but you have to stay away from your lover? Do you care more about earning more money? You must get more boring / stress / less satisfied work? No matter what the outcome of the above enumeration, no matter how many other things around you, it is very difficult for you to decide what to do in life, because you have to predict the future.

There are many reasons why we seem to be good at predicting what we think.

If I knew I was enjoying what I was doing now, I would enjoy it later, wouldn't I? I've spent years trying to build a series of my love movies, books, soap opera, and things I don't like - seeing the dentist, serious embarrassment and flu, especially all of which are not at the same time.

If I get both the likes and dislikes at the same time, it will be easy to predict what I think in the future.

But it seems that we are often shocked by our future.

Our erroneous concept of future thinking has been named "Gilbert" and "Wilson" (miswanting).

A series of studies have found that we predict the ability to make us happier in the future.

One of my favorite experiments is that two groups of participants take part in the experiment, and they will get a free sandwich, which is absolutely a good thing for college students.

One group chose the sandwiches they needed for the week; the other group chose the sandwiches they need every day.

An incredible thing happened.

Those who choose sandwiches daily choose the same sandwiches at lunchtime, and the subjects are reasonably happy about their choices.

But surprisingly, the choice of those who plan to have lunch next week is changeable.

They choose turkey sandwiches on Monday, tuna sandwiches on Tuesday, and egg sandwiches on Wednesday.

But with the coming week, most of them don't like the change they think they should have.

In fact, they are more unhappy and show significant differences compared with the subjects they choose everyday.

"If we knew our future, we would be so unhappy."

This kind of "diversity" and "identity" are only a special deviation when people predict future emotional states.

Here is another positive psychology's "counterintuitive bias".

The main thing is to observe how people predict their feelings when they encounter catastrophic bad things in their lives or fantastical positive events.

For example: if you win the lottery, how good do you feel? Most people predict that their lives will be completely changed and they will live happier.

What is the conclusion of the study? Yes, people are really happy when they have just discovered that they won the lottery, but 6 months later, the level of happiness has returned to the "baseline" level of life.

It is ridiculous that in this noble journey, whether we predict our feelings after the lottery, or predict what sandwiches we will eat at noon, if we know our future, we are all so unhappy.

So when we can't predict what sandwiches we are going to eat next week, how can we predict what kind of jobs we will be doing in the next 20 years?

As we get older, we become wiser sometimes.

With our

Study

No matter what is unknown or known, we are not good at predicting our future.

We are beginning to realize that this is not more scientific than what we once thought.

"People begin to understand that the future contains so little uncertainty."

That is to say, your future is a stranger to you.

So, you know, the same is why it's hard for a 18 year old young person to choose his career.

But for a middle-aged person, when his learning is very limited, what he encountered is a severe condemnation.

This seems to be another reason why people are getting older and prudent, but it is far from that.

To be more precise, prudence does not increase with age, but is implied by self-knowledge.

People begin to understand that the future contains many unnoticeable uncertainties, even those that seem to be under our control, just like we choose sandwiches.

The debate on erroneous ideas has been applied to any area of our lives, including forecasting our future.

Career planning has become a painful matter because it is such an important decision, and we must understand it through very limited useful information.

The best career planning strategy is this: try your best to guess and test it. Don't be surprised if you don't like it.

However, please do not mention this in any interview.
