 "Intelligent spinning"

Imagine such a scene: one wearing stripes.

scarf

People are waiting for a car, every one minute, the stripes on the scarf will disappear. Or a dress like this, the slogans on it can be automatically replaced by the Facebook state of the wearer, or a skirt that allows the wearer to decide the color and design of the day.

In addition, the technology can also be applied.

T-shirt

Connect to the wearer's Tinder account. When approaching someone who wants to "right", the color of the clothes will change slightly, and even the watch can be woven into the cuffs of the clothes directly.

The above scenario is not the scene of a science fiction movie.

According to reports, researchers from University of California at Berkeley School of information and GoogleATAP (Advanced Technology and Projects) ProjectJacquard jointly invented a computer fabric technology called Ebb, based on this technology, they made "intelligent spinning" which can change the fabric pattern and change color.

The members of the research team include: Laura Devendorf, NouraHowell, information college, assistant professor KimikoByokai of new media center, etc.

Laura Devendorf, an artist, designer, and a double degree in computer science and visual arts, is the leader of this research.

She focuses on research that supports human creativity.

Mechanics.

Howell studies the importance of information representation, emotional system design, intimacy and human-machine interaction.

The researchers explained that the reason for the name is Ebb because "the color change is like a tidal wave, which is different from a fast changing traditional screen."

The Institute said on its website that the smart fabric can be used to make clothing or other textiles with color or pattern changing dynamically.

The core technology of Ebb is the conductive thin wire coated with thermochromic pigment. When the fine wire is electrified, the color changes with the change of charge.

At the beginning of the project, the team made seven kinds of crochet knitted fabrics and textile samples with this intelligent spinning line.

The research team presented their research results at the Computer-Human Interaction Conference (CHI) this year, and won the best Research Report Award (BestPaper).

The sponsor of the CHI conference is ACMSIGCHI (ACMSpecialInterest Groupon Computer-Human Interaction).

Survey feedback

Who wants to wear a computer screen? What do people think about computerized clothing? The research team interviewed 17 people, including five fashion designers, to discuss these problems.

At first, many people suspected that Ebb was another form of computer screen.

A visitor said, "I don't want to wear a screen."

Another said, "there are enough things in my life that will glow."

This concept is not reminiscent of the built-in light-emitting diode clothing: "glittering Christmas Sweater, children walking on the shining shoes, or amusement parks and Carnival common LED lighting cap."

But Ebb is not a light-emitting screen, but fabrics can be discolouration.

After experiencing the sample, many of the respondents changed their original view.

One said, "it feels more like clothes than plastic.

I think it's more friendly and easier to accept. "

Many respondents liked the gradual change of color of Ebb.

Gemma, a visiting designer, said, "I love this ghostly and ghostly hot discoloration."

Another found these samples "more adapted to the environment, rather than attracting attention."

Another said: "slow appearance of patterns can give information display with" Zen ".

 "Intelligent spinning"

In the course of the survey, some interviewees believed that using Ebb can make people surprise and make people communicate more enjoyable.

For example, you can chat with each other like this: "a minute ago, is your skirt not blue?" or "how did the stripes on your shoulder disappear?"

ProjectJacquard is a platform for installing sensors and feedback devices in seemingly ordinary fabrics.

The platform's applications include weaving high-tech conductive fibers into fabrics, putting them into microcomputers and feedback devices, such as LED or tactile feedback, and application programming interfaces that can be used to exchange data.

For example, smart cowboy fabric with Levi s, an old cowboy garment company.

Berkeley School of information said that clothing based on Ebb technology will not appear in stores in the near future.

Although ProjectJacquard has explored many applications of wearable digital technology, the current technology can not be widely applied.

But the study of Ebb will help stimulate creativity and understand people's views and feelings about digital clothing.
